North Fell
Cumbria · House · 2023 · Complete

A single-storey house laid along the contour, dark enough that it disappears from the fell above it.
The planning officer's first question was how we would stop it being visible from the ridge. The answer was to make it long and low rather than compact, and to clad it in charred larch so it reads as shadow rather than object.
Inside, the plan is one room deep. Every space has the same view and the same light, which sounds monotonous and is the opposite — the weather does all the varying.
